November - Did we achieve something?

November 30th, 2007 by Sanyog

It has been almost a month since last posting. All of us at 160by2 have been very busy with a number of things all these days, which resulted in no blog post. So what exactly have we been upto? We have been working crazily to improve your experience on 160by2, and add more advertisers. Some of those things are:

a) Product Development - We have been working to make the site better, improve the performance and introduce new means of accessing website e.g. 160by2 WAP site (mobile internet site). Our WAP site now constitutes almost 5% of our traffic, within a month of its launch! More than 2000 of our users use our WAP site to send free SMS from their mobile.

b) Advertiser Presentations - We have been meeting all the top notch advertisers to present the concept of 160by2, as highly effective mobile advertising medium. The feedback from advertisers is amazing and highly encouraging. We already have a number of big brands like Cadbury, McDonalds, Jet Airways, Domino’s etc on board and are working on the campaigns for few more major national brands

c) Campaign Activation - What comes to you as a simple ad on your mobile or on 160by2.com is culmination of a lot of creative and analytical effort. We work closely with brands to deliver high impact, highly targeted advertising campaigns so they get maximum for their bucks. Our content team has been extremely busy with activation of all those campaigns

We are very pleased to share with our users, few milestones that we hit in November.
- We ended November with more than one lakh registered users sending more than one lakh messages per day!
- In November we sent more than 2 million ‘User Generated’ messages, double of our October traffic and expected to increase two fold again in December
- We now count brands like Cadbury Dairy Milk, McDonalds, Horlicks Lite, Cadbury Ulta Perk, Jet Airways, Moneyline, Domino’s and many more amongst our advertisers.

In a nutshell, we are making great progress. The team here is thrilled by the response of our users. And we want to just thank all our users for being with us. You are the greatest source of inspiration for us, and are driving us to create a viable mass yet personal mobile advertising in 160by2! Thank You! :)

hi.. i was thinking of an idea.. why doesnt 160by2 tie up with institutes which sends bulk msgs to all d students - like lecture cancellation, announcements.. i think u have a potential revenue earner thru this medium.. our college uses Vodafone service presently, but if u find a way out, u can tie up with the thousands of colleges and schools in this country (vodafone or such big fish cant manage to reach to so many institutes, so its a gr8 idea for you ppl to spread ur wings and tie up with schools/colleges)

pls let me know ur feedback on this… hope u’re listening !! :)

  13. Subir Sarkar Says:

    Hi Friends,
I was continuously looking for some software or site from which I can send free SMS to my friends, it is pathetic to pay my network provider INR 1 or INR 2 for each local and national SMS I send, where they more or less do not incur any extra cost to provide me the said service. I found 160by2.com today only and have registered there. I am glad to know that you guys have such a good facility because in todays daily life SMSes are a regular part of the game.
But I wanted to know something from you guys that, is there any way by what I can send SMS to someone in Israel (Haifa). The international SMS charges are too high as at INR 5 for each SMS sent. And it causes a big amount of extra burden on my monthly telephone expenditure. Please revert me back on this if you have any remedy for this problem. I would be very happy if you guys can make this help.
Thanking 160by2 again and my best wishes to you, hope you guys become the best in the business and get all the success you deserve. Looking for a sharp and positive response from your side on the said matter.

  14. varkey Says:

I have been using the mobile version of the site for some time now. The mobile site is simple and fast but it would be even better if there was some small java software or something which you can use to send the messages. In the current system its a but difficult to search for a contact and send the message. Instead if it was possible to use the phones phoonbook itself it would be great.

Anyway thank you very much for the wonderful service.

  15. o160by2take3 Says:

    Super!
This concept was waiting to happen. But Indians with open minds are *extremely* rare commodities.

You’ve got the business model right, the people right, the web promo (this blog) right, and the site works.
Now, users have to get the idea right.

Btw, have you made an Orkut community, a Facebook app and groups at digg, bigadda, zapak.com and the like?

    @ suman:
your idea is brilliant. hope these guys take it seriously.

SMS can now be *programmed*, so you could use simple text commands to send SMSes to systems to do a wide variety of things both online and offline.

With iPhone / Android craze going around, 160by2 can do really new things.

Has anyone of you guys in the core team been to Japan?

If you were Japanese you would first think of warming up your car engine by SMS by the time you reach the garage.
Then maybe trying to put a remote muster late remark (excuse) by SMS.
You could tell the local kirana or the mall next door to keep these ten things ready for pickup at the door - I grab the grub from my car itself and get going.
You could book tickets anywhere - flights/trains/movies/yadda/yadda.
You could do a whole lot of things that we have not even thought of.

    Copy Japan. But slowly.
Don’t force too many things down the user’s throat at one time.
Like a good storyteller slowly builds up the plot - “coming soon” should be a feature on the front page, adding things every week.
    Get a thought-for-the-day service.
When you expand to MMS, then, the real party begins.

Put a few public service or civic messages.
That will make you pretty famous.
    See freerice.com and poverty.com
    See the stats of freerice

Hehehehe … and also keep a silent “hint for the question” message for those who cheat in exams…

    All in all, great work!
    -o160by2take3

(But take care to see that you don’t spill our profile data to anyone.
Of course, feel free to SMS me as well…)

it is wonderful site plz log as early as possible

  24. o160by2take3 Says:

Do you realize the utility of your service when disasters occur in Indian cities? You could help by doing preventive preparation as follows:
Introduce a civic message of the day. This should be one regular message - “In case of a city-wide disaster, kindly use sms only. Please avoid burdening mobile networks on such days”.
If Telecom cos sleep, we citizens should work, don’t you think?
Like Mumbai rains or traffic disruptions or similar situations.
What’s the point if cellphone networks jam in situations like these?

I very clearly remember that web access was perfectly normal on such days. Thrice tested. Email worked, website/forum access worked. So if you start a 160by2 HelpCentre for such messages, it would be useful to everyone.
It’s called Corporate Social Responsibility and you’ll be Sociopreneurs.
Strangely, one must *spoon-feed* people to help *themselves*.

    @ o160by2take3

the MMS idea could do wonders to this site.. but the cellular cos lobby would try to stamp down on it, i guess..

i m ashwani sindhu… did internship there in may-july….160by2 team is doing really good ..great going…mobile version of website is really a good option to reach more ppl…
I would like to suggest that a mobile application can also be developed using j2me which can be made available to download frm site…i think that wud save some extra bytes…as in this case GPRS would be used only for sending sms..not every time for opening the website..

  40. Varun Says:

Hi i just want to suggest one thing:

There should be more Filters while Searching on ‘My SMS’ tab.

Like we can search our sent messages to a specific member .
As per now we are only able to filter through dates.

As if i want to Search my messages sent to XYZ friend then i should be able to do that under ‘My SMS’ tab .
