The social network is live, 160by2 moved beyond free sms and is now a social network around SMS. I know we launched it in a hurry as the 160by2 web team wanted to gift this new website as a gift to their CEO (that’s me) on his birthday (30th October) and so still have some bugs. I want you to give honest feedback and report errors/bugs so that we can improve it much before many users experience the new service.

We saw that people are spending huge amounts of time on internet based social networks like Facebook and Orkut when infact all their “social network” in on their Phone – in their contact list. I have about 300 contacts on my phone and about 30% of them are in constant touch with me. This is my real social network and i would be interested in being part of their lives.

You (about 10 million of 160by2 users) have saved about 85 million contacts online as they send sms to them regularly. There is already a social network sitting there in your contact list all we needed to do was to make it interactive and bring in social angle to it. It would be a good idea if you can know what sms your friends are sending & sharing online.

we also saw that there were more than a million searches on google search engine for “SMS templates”. People were searching for creative sms like ” diwali sms wishes” or a “valentine day sms” etc. In real life each one of us get great sms and they are forwarded to our friends and remain only within our close friends network. It would be great if these wow sms can be shared with the rest of the world. So this idea of “Public SMS” which is core to our social network platform. You should upload your photos, follow all your friends, share & create all the great SMSs that are in your inbox.

The idea to morph a free SMS service into a social network was a bold idea. The question was how to position our service as a Social network around SMS and not give an impression that it is not another twitter or a facebook. After 8 months of confusion and experimentation and your feedback, we finally launched it with a decent feel to it.

There are lot of features and presentation elements which are in the pipeline. We also want you to tell us what more you want so that you can “live” on 160by2 24by7. We should constantly improve it based on user feedback and create a social media which will be a lifeline for Indian and global users across the internet.

We at 160by2, the most popular site for SMS in India with more than 9.5 Million registered users, thought that the iPhone was a little incomplete like the “half-eaten” apple logo of the Apple Inc. We raked our brains and came up with the application which will fit into it and make it complete. Just the way “the apple” should be

160by2 came up with this innovative iPhone application which will change the face of communication- Free SMS from all the iPhones. After all, why shouldn’t personal messaging be free? This could not have been possible without the partnership of 160by2.com with AhaApps.com, a U.S based company with its development center in India, providing mobile applications for iPhone, Blackberry and Android mobiles.

The application which was launched on 1^st October 2010 has already taken the world by storm with more than 3000 downloads, 1000 registrations, 35000 messages sent to 10 countries. Phew!!! We are still counting…
